Although it would be nice if you could always trust estate agents and developers, taking ownership of a property before it has been independently surveyed or visitied in person is a massive risk.
Would you sign up for a mobile phone contract without knowing how many minutes and texts you were going to get? Would you take ownership of a used car without taking it for a test drive? No......, me neither. So why would you do it with a foreign property?
Although it's understood that purchasing a property in a foreign country has caused more hassle than you originally thought, or cost more in adminstrative expense, please make sure that you don't take ownership of an asset that's potentially worth £10,000's without having it checked out first.
Many people can't afford the time off work to visit a property in person prior to exchanging ownership, so this service is must have at only a few hundred pounds. Not spending this money is a false economy because once you ahve taken ownership you can bet your bottom dollar that a developer is unlikely to fix the snags in hurry, at no charge, if at all.
